Oh thank you so much! It makes so much more sense now. Your comparison and summary for the novel and movie was brilliant. I realize this now because the note that Akari had written at the train station was like a goodbye letter to him.

She did love him but knew that they would have to move on soon. As for Takaki, after the reunion, in Cosmonaut, he still hangs on to Akari and tries to reach her all the time. Seeing this with Kanae's eyes. I guess something like this had replayed in the last crossing scene.

Akari moved on with her life whereas Takaki had still been behind. I guess after those two trains left, Takaki finally moved on; indicated when Takaki smiled towards the end. I love the story and this movie even more. I can't wait for Shinkai's newest project, which he says is going to be one of his best work. I respect Shinkai as an anme director greatly.

Well, that's up for debate since even the novel doesn't say specifically that it's her. It only heavily implies it was and I personally believe it was her for the reasons I mentioned in my write-up.

She probably walked off as soon as her view was blocked off by the train because she had moved on long before Takaki and hasn't been thinking about him as much anymore. Whereas for Takaki, he only moved on after the crossing at the end of the story.

We see she waited for him at the train crossing when they were younger in the music video and the affection was there but now, we see that she doesn't wait for him now that they're both in their adulthood and living on with their separate lives.

Hey xcomp, I have a few questions about the ending of 5 centimeters per second. I hope you'll answer if you have the time.

1. At the ending when Takaki thinks he senses the woman that he had just crossed as being Akari, is it her? And after the flashback when those two trains were done crossing and Akari wasn't there, was Takaki imagining or was Akari really behind those trains? Because this is bothering me,=(.

I've watched it. Omo pointed it out <a href="http://www.omonomono.com/2008/05/29/beyond-shinkai/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">on his blog</a> a while ago.

I like the idea about how the more one recalls a memory, the more it becomes an illusion. The artwork and music's very similar to Shinkai's work too but, I feel the build up and story telling isn't as good.
